VIRMP® Info

Introduction

The Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program® brings structure and fairness to how veterinary graduates find internship and residency positions.

Participating programs list their available positions. Applicants submit one application which is made available to the programs that interest them. Both sides submit a confidential ranked list of preferences — applicants rank programs, programs rank applicants — and a neutral process pairs them. Neither side sees the other’s list.

Because everyone works from the same calendar and results are released to everyone at the same time, no applicant faces an offer that expires before they have finished interviewing, and no program competes on deadline pressure rather than fit. The process treats every applicant and every program the same way, whether a program is large or small.

Participation is voluntary. Not all programs that offer internships and residencies participate. The VIRMP® is sponsored by the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians and used by institutions across the United States and Canada.

The American Association of Veterinary Clinicians and the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program embrace community and belonging and promote those values in the veterinary medical profession.
