Additional Information about Program

Garden State Veterinary Specialists is a 24/7 referral hospital and emergency/critical care facility. It is staffed by specialists, board certified in the following fields: surgery, internal medicine, emergency and critical care, oncology, neurology, ophthalmology, dermatology and cardiology. For over 20 years, GSVS has attracted some of the most talented specialists in the veterinary profession and created a skilled support team of technicians, assistants and administrative staff. Although there have been some new additions over the past few years, most of the specialists at GSVS have been on staff an average of 9 years. The longevity of our staff veterinarians with the hospital has allowed GSVS to develop a cohesive team that enjoys working with the intern class and has created a supportive and nurturing environment for our interns. All of our specialists are available for consultation at any time, day or night, and they never shy away from offering assistance. An intern's duties include primary management of emergency cases, evaluation and formulation of plans for hospitalized patients, and assisting specialists with surgical and medical procedures as they rotate through each of GSVS’s services. Our interns are not on call.An in-house consultation policy allows the patient to be evaluated by multiple specialists from different disciplines and therefore provides a collaborative learning experience for the intern. This approach prepares the intern for either a residency in their chosen field of study or entry into private practice. Didactic training consists of daily case-based rounds, biweekly informal lunchtime rounds, weekly formal lectures by staff doctors, and monthly meetings held by specialists in the tri-state area. Onsite training utilizes a state-of-the-art audio visual computer system. This system provides our lecturers with access to a variety of resources during their presentations including the internet, radiographs and other digital media. Continuing education meetings, including one monthly meeting held on the premises, are also offered and attendance is encouraged.GSVS receives referrals from veterinarians in practices located throughout the New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania region. Our hospital is fully equipped with the latest equipment including three ultrasound machines; videoscopy instrumentation for endoscopy, bronchoscopy, and rhinoscopy; doppler pressure monitoring; pulse oximetry; continuous ECG monitoring; continuous chest tube suction; in-house laboratory capabilities, including coagulation tests and arterial blood gases; laser treatment for glaucoma; phacoemulsification; ERGs; EMGs; and BAERs. Our surgical suites are fully equipped for neurosurgery, soft tissue surgery, and orthopedic procedures; including brain tumors, arthroscopy, thoracoscopy, laparoscopy, and total hip replacements. A GE dual high speed NX CT scanner and GE 1.5 Tessla MRI scanner are on-site and used extensively for patient diagnostics. A Varian Silhouette Linear Accelerator is also on-site for radiation therapy. GSVS utilizes an Antechimaging digital radiography system which provides access to radiographs in the surgical suites and throughout the hospital's extensive computer system, as well as remotely. Our hospital is also only one of a few practices in New Jersey to be licensed to treat hyperthyroid cats with radioactive iodine. Over the past five years we have treated an average of 200 cats per year with this modality.• The surgical service is managed by four Diplomates of the ACVS. The interns perform surgical procedures with the staff and are the primary surgeon on cases such as ovariohysterectomies, castrations, mass removals and lacerations. • The internal medicine service consists of four Diplomates of the ACVIM. Interns are included in the decision making process for patient care and assist with ultrasound and endoscopic procedures. All endoscopic and arthroscopic evaluations utilize video technology thereby enhancing the learning experience for the intern. • The emergency and critical care service is managed by three veterinarians, one is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and the other two are Diplomates of both the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. Interns have primary case responsibility and are supervised by these specialists. • Two board-certified neurologists manage the neurology service and perform neurosurgery. They have extensive experience in neurosurgery and it is a significant part of the neurology service caseload. Our CT scanner and MRI unit are used extensively in the formulation of diagnostic and therapeutic plans for patients. Interns are instructed on how to utilize these advanced imaging tools and interpret their results. The interns also assist our neurologists with electrodiagnostics and neurosurgery. • The oncology service is managed by two boarded oncologists, one of whom is also board certified in radiation oncology. Another member of the oncology team is a licensed radiation therapist who is also a certified medical dosimetrist. Interns gain exposure to modern chemotherapy and radiation protocols including IRMT and Stereotactic radiation therapy treatment plans. A Varian Silhouette Linear Accelerator is utilized on-site for radiation therapy. Treatment plans are designed using an Elekta Monaco treatment planning system. This system receives images from our GE Dual Hi-Speed NX CT scanner for anatomy contouring and beam formation. This allows our clinicians to produce an accurate image of a tumor along with the surrounding organs so that multiple radiation beams can be shaped to the contour of the treatment area while sparing the surrounding normal tissues. The oncology team works closely with the other services in the hospital in order to ensure the well-being of the patient. • The cardiology service is directed by a full-time board certified cardiologist. Interventional cardiology is a significant component of the cardiology caseload. The intern works closely with our cardiologist evaluating patients and performing procedures.• The ophthalmology service is headed by a Diplomate of the ACVO. The service performs a variety of procedures such as phacoemulsification with intraocular lens placement (our unit also allows for retinal reattachment) and endocyclophotoablation (ECP). The intern assists with all appointments and with surgery. • The dermatology service, is directed by a Diplomate of the ACVD. The intern assists with all appointments. In addition to our Tinton Falls hospital, GSVS has two additional community based 24-hour emergency, referral hospitals. Interns rotate through these other hospitals on a limited basis. An interview either in person or by telephone is strongly recommended before January 8th, 2016. Interviews should be scheduled via phone or e-mail ([email protected]) BEFORE December 14, 2015 to ensure availability. We also encourage externships with our specialty services and welcome you to visit our hospital in person. Further information can be obtained by visiting our website, www.gsvs.org. Tinton Falls is primarily a residential community, minutes from the Jersey Shore.
