Additional Information about this Program
The Veterinary Specialty Hospital - North County by Ethos Veterinary Health is proud to continue our surgery specialty internship. VSH-NC is a specialist referral hospital in San Diego dedicated to innovation, clinical research, and unparalleled, comprehensive veterinary care. The internship is a rigorous 1-year program centered on clinical training in surgical oncology, minimally invasive surgery, and interventional radiology with dedicated time towards prospective clinical research. The program is designed for competitive applicants with an interest in pursuing surgery specialty training following the internship year. It is expected that the applicant will have already completed a rotating internship. The intern will be supervised by three ACVS boarded specialists, including a surgeon with a Colorado State University Fellowship in Surgical Oncology. The intern will spend most time with the soft tissue service but will also rotate with the orthopedic and neurosurgery services. Additionally, 24 board-certified or board-eligible specialists support the hospital program. Specialty services available at VSH-NC include: surgery, anesthesiology, internal medicine, emergency and critical care, neurology, oncology, dermatology, cardiology, dentistry, pharmacy, sports medicine and rehab, and diagnostic imaging. The objectives of the internship are to provide the surgical intern experience with complex surgical oncology caseload with an emphasis on minimally invasive surgery, interventional oncology, interventional endoscopy, in addition to standard surgical oncology procedures. Primary case management, with direct supervision from board-certified specialists, allows for maximum clinical exposure. The intern will have a direct and prominent role in assisting with several prospective clinical trials, with an average of 8 clinical trials open at a time. This includes a groundbreaking, randomized clinical trial on hemangiosarcoma in 400 dogs, a funded trial on splenic artery embolizations, and an ongoing prospective clinical trial on thoracoscopic metastasectomy in dogs. The intern will receive dedicated time for manuscript preparation, grant writing, and will be expected to assist with completion of clinical trials-related paperwork, recruitment of patients for enrollment in clinical trials, in addition to daily clinical duties. The hospital is equipped with a brand new Storz 4k endoscopy tower with near-infrared imaging, rigid and flexible endoscopy, VITOM exoscope, warmed, humidified insufflation, and a Calculase III Ho:Yag laser lithotripter. The interventional radiology suite is equipped with an OEC 9800 12” C-Arm with a vascular package, flat screen LCD monitor upgrades, and disposables necessary for advanced vascular, hepatobiliary, and airway procedures. We recently installed the most advanced CT scanner in southern california, a 128-slice Canon Aquilion with bolus tracking for precise angiograms, CT fluoroscopy capabilities, and double-slice reconstruction for accurate MPR and 3D volume rendering. We have an MRI (1.5 Siemens Magnetom), neurologic testing including EEG, EMG and BAER testing, as well as a physical rehabilitation center (including underwater treadmill, acupuncture, TENS/NMES, therapeutic ultrasound, and PRP therapy), a state-of-the-art USP 800 compliant chemotherapy facility, and a new in-house pharmacy suite. We are located in the beautiful area of North County San Diego, close to the beach, numerous hiking locations providing spectacular views of San Diego and other recreational areas, attractions (only 10 minutes from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and a 30 minute drive from the San Diego Zoo and Sea World), unique food venues (such as the annual avocado festival, annual chocolate festival, etc) as well as ample cultural opportunities. Our hospital is passionate about our interns and internship program and consider it a key component of our team-oriented teaching hospital culture.Interns are expected to be highly-motivated, committed, team-oriented, energetic individuals who desire to strengthen their education and residency application.
