Additional Information about this Program
The UF Internship in Zoological Companion Animal (ZCA/exotics) Primary Care and Emergency Medicine is a new 1-year training program to prepare veterinarians for practicing high quality ZCA medicine in general practice and/or emergency medicine. It is supervised by a Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) and supported by the Zoological Medicine (Zoo Med) and Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) faculty. The majority of the program involves participation in the Zoo Med and ECC Services within the UF Veterinary Hospitals. The first three months will be spent mostly in the Zoological Medicine Service under faculty supervision during routine business hours. Clinical cases within the service include client-owned zoological companion animals, native Florida wildlife, and animals from zoological institutions, including Lubee Bat Conservancy, St. Augustine Alligator Farm, and Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo. Approximately 3,300 cases are treated by the service annually. The intern will share case responsibility with two Zoological Medicine Residents and one Zoo Rotating Intern. The majority of the following nine months will be split between the Zoological Medicine and Emergency and Critical Care Services, with increasing time spent in ECC as the year progresses. The intern will be primarily responsible for managing any ZCA cases that come in to the ER during their shift, including small mammals (rabbits, ferrets, rodents, etc), birds, and reptiles. If they are available, they may also take dog and cat cases and triage wildlife. Emergency and Critical Care faculty will be present during ECC shifts with Zoological Medicine house officers and faculty available at all times for case consultations and assistance. The intern will also rotate through Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery, Radiology, and Anesthesia during the first six months. Please note, this program is not a rotating internship and is not oriented for those wishing to pursue residency training in zoological medicine.
