Internship - Rotating – Small Animal

Rotating Small Animal Internship in a busy hybrid referral hospital

VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital

We were hybrid before hybrid was cool! Our hospital has been caring for our specialty and general practice patients, while being an active participant in our South Florida community for over 75 years. Diversity in our clientele, staff and patient population is our shining star. Our patients are on all rungs of the socioeconomic ladder. We ourselves are a diverse group representing over 5 different countries, 10 different states and all pronouns. Proudly, we boast that our interns graduate and successfully continue on to their desired specialty or become successful, confident and progressive GP/ Emergency veterinarians.

Additional Details about Caseload
VCA Hollywood is a fast-paced hybrid practice. We see primary or first opinion cases as well as serve as a sought-after tertiary care facility. Our interns are the mainstay of how we triage our cases as they are often the first veterinarian that the patient and client have seen for either an urgent care or emergency concern. Our interns excel in improving their exam room confidence, as well as their clinical acumen. We are fortunate that the case loads are as diverse as our staff and vary from a textbook Addisonian to recognizing a potential Zinc toxicosis

Other Personnel of Note
VCA Hollywood is proud to have a minimum of one person in every department that has been with us since the late 1900’s. Many others have been with us since the early 2000s, and we all continue to progress and grow together. Our personnel and non-veterinary staff are just as integral as our veterinarians and clientele to our inner workings. We share strong bonds, while maintaining a welcoming environment for those that wish to be included in our controlled chaos

Additional Information About Work Schedule
Our rotations run in 8-week blocks. 2/8 weeks are dedicated to shoulder-to-shoulder time with specialty. We require that 3 of those 2-week blocks are with our specialty teams. Medicine/Critical Care, Surgery and either Oncology or Dermatology. The remaining 6 weeks are comprised of swing, daytime EMS as well as GP and Overnight. Our intention is to keep the spirit of this following template. Out rotations are available as long as the specialty is not offered at VCA Hollywood and should be submitted for review and approval at least 6 weeks prior to desired date. We are fortunate that we have fostered a symbiotic relationship with our local humane society, as our current rotating interns are expected to spend two of their specialty weeks lining up TNTC surgeries.

Other Equipment/Technology of Note
We may be one of the oldest hospitals on the VIRMP (are we actually the oldest private practice??) but at VCA Hollywood we don’t shy away from evolving how we help provide for our patients. All our veterinarians enthusiastically go to CE conferences and bring back their knowledge to cage side rounds and ultimately in the services and therapies we offer. Most recently, we added high flow oxygen for our severely dyspneic patient. We updated our endoscopy equipment to help us retrieve those unmentionables as well as improve evaluations of the GI and respiratory tracts. We are now using viscoelastic testing to help better understand our metabolically complex patients and at the time of this publication, we have new patient monitoring equipment ordered and new POC laboratory testing on our short wish lists.

Additional Program Requirements
  • Other Program Requirements
VCA Hollywood is a unique fun, fast paced private practice located in a diverse location. The optimal veterinarian is someone who is open-minded and enjoys working alongside a fabulous group of personalities that ultimately will have your back for the remainder of your career. We don’t want to sugar coat it; our interns work hard and see a lot of primary walk-ins and emergencies but.... most of the time within just a couple of steps lies a seasoned veterinarian that is always available for a question and help behind the scenes. Therefore, our requirement is that new Interns are up and ready for a busy, chaotic year, knowing that we are here to help them find their footing and confidence to then go on to the next challenge.
