Additional Information about Program

Carolina Veterinary Specialists is a 24 hour full service referral hospital group with three locations participating in this rotating intern program. The 3 locations are in Charlotte, Matthews and Huntersville North Carolina. Specialty referral services include internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, behavior, oncology, cardiology, neurology and avian/exotics in addition to daytime and overnight emergency and critical care. The internship program is comprised of 13 rotations that alternate through all three hospitals which are approximately 30 minutes apart. These rotations are primarily based in internal medicine, surgery and emergency with exposure to additional specialties during elective rotations. We offer an elective rotation that the intern can select in any of the following specialties: ophthalmology, avian and exotics medicine, neurology, oncology or cardiology. The successfully matched intern will be an integral part of our hospitals with intensive exposure to complicated and interesting small animal cases in both primary and secondary roles. There are weekly case and journal rounds as well as monthly topic rounds and daily cage side rounds. The Matthews hospital has monthly specialty topic rounds. We strive to create a constructive, supportive and congenial atmosphere in which to prepare an intern for either further pursuits in academia or entry into private practice. You will be given the opportunity to gain the tools and knowledge necessary to practice high-quality veterinary medicine or enter a residency program. You will also receive regular, constructive feedback on your performance. Most interns that participate in our program tend to pursue careers in Emergency Medicine, Surgery, Internal Medicine and General Practice.Compensation includes $29,000 annual salary, 50% contribution towards major medical insurance, 5 paid days off (to be used for sick days, family/personal emergencies and residency/job interviews), premium for professional liability insurance and NC licensure fee (includes $250 exam fee, score transfer fee, privilege license fee) and $150 to be used for continuing education.Charlotte is an affluent and rapidly-growing southeastern community of 1.5 million people. The city offers the best of big-city AND small-town living with excellent restaurants, entertainment, sporting events and outdoor activities. To learn more about our city please visit www.charlottesgotalot.com. Please note the Winston-Salem and Greensboro hospitals maintain separate internship programs that require separate application. This program solely encompasses the three hospital group in Charlotte, Matthews and Huntersville. Once again, our intern program rotates through these three hospitals throughout the year. As an intern you will spend an equal amount of time between all three hospitals. See our website at www.carolinavet.com for more information on these three practices and how we work together.
