Additional Information about Program

VCA San Francisco Veterinary Specialists (VCA SFVS) is one of two veterinary specialty practices in the city of San Francisco. We have been treating critically ill and injured pets in the Bay Area region for nearly 15 years. VCA SFVS offers specialty services in internal medicine, oncology, neurology, dermatology, cardiology, nutrition, behavior, holistic medicine, dentistry, and surgery. Our recently expanded hospital includes 3 surgery suites, ultrasound, CT, MRI, as well as arthroscopy, endoscopy and laparoscopy equipment. Each of our surgery suites has dedicated monitoring equipment and ventilators. We also maintain the most current critical care therapeutic modalities and programs to support our most critical patients. Interns at VCA SFVS will rotate through each specialty service during their 12 month program. Arrangements can be made for elective rotations outside the hospital for interns wishing to pursue training in areas outside the specialties offered at VCA SFVS. In the past, our interns have participated in elective rotations such as ophthalmology, shelter medicine, mobile treatment, and vaccination clinics. Interns are expected to attend twice-daily cage-side rounds, weekly formal topic rounds, weekly radiology rounds, bi-weekly internal medicine journal club, and monthly intern-led case study rounds. Our specialists will provide supervision and instruction on clinical rotations as well as help direct the interns’ efforts when preparing case presentations or lectures. VCA provides interns with a comprehensive benefits package, including:• VIN Membership at no charge • Plumb’s Veterinary Drugs online subscription at no charge• Continuing Education allowance • Eligibility for Medical, Dental and Vision Coverage • Eligibility for Life and Long-Term Disability Insurance • Eligibility to participate in 401(k) retirement savings plan • Professional Liability CoverageOur goal at VCA SFVS is to help new doctors develop clinical/patient assessment skills, hone diagnostic abilities, gain technical expertise with equipment and procedures, and become confident and proficient in their communication skills with both their colleagues and with our pet owners. At VCA SFVS we believe that providing an intensive internship experience through a high-quality, well-rounded program in a metropolitan area where people love their pets will prepare new doctors for the next step in their careers. There is no doubt that interns will be very busy at VCA SFVS, but during their time off they will not have to go far to find places and ways to relax. The San Francisco Bay area offers an unsurpassed quality of life.
