Additional Information about Program

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the Michigan State University (MSU) College of Veterinary Medicine is offering five (5) general rotating internship positions for the 2017-2018 year. The strongest consideration for these positions is given to applicants who:•Have demonstrated academic excellence•Show evidence of leadership potential•Show the potential to make distinctive professional or scholarly contributions•Contribute to a diverse educational communityThe program consists of required rotations through specialty areas including Soft Tissue Surgery, Internal Medicine, Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, Cardiology, Anesthesia, Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Diagnostic Imaging. Interns are also required to rotate through the Primary Care service. Elective rotations (approximately 10 weeks) are available to allow the intern to gain additional valuable experience in areas of interest. Experience gained through clinical rotations is supplemented by a series of Intern Seminars presented by faculty and residents, attendance of house officer seminars, and elective participation in resident-level rounds discussions, specialty boards review sessions, and case presentations. The MSU Internship Program will provide the intern with a diverse educational experience that will prepare him/her for higher training programs or serve as an excellent base for entry into the general practice sector.Duties will include:•Working directly with senior faculty, residents, technicians, veterinary students, and veterinary technology students in the service areas assigned. Interns WILL have primary patient responsibility and service duty.•Full participation in instructional opportunities and responsibilities such as clinical teaching, rounds, and seminar discussions.The intern is appointed as an Instructor/Intern. No formal course work is included in the program. Comprehensive Medical/Dental coverage, 10 days of paid vacation, and professional liability coverage are provided. Practice in the MSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital requires Michigan Veterinary Licensure. A clinical academic license is available and acceptable, and requires no additional testing beyond NAVLE. The Michigan Veterinary License application fee will be paid for the selected candidate; however, additional fees, including but not limited to, transcript requests, criminal background check/finger printing, verification of licensure in another state, etc., may be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
