Additional Information about Program

Hospital Overview:Pet Specialists of Monterey is an AAHA-certified, 24 hour emergency and referral-only hospital located on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula. Our 6,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility features an in-house laboratory, digital radiography, ultrasound, and endoscopy. Pet Specialists has a Minimally Invasive Surgery program with rigid laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, and arthroscopy. Interventional radiology, with urethral and tracheal stenting services, is available as well. Our new 16-slice helical CT scanner was just installed this past fall. With board-certified specialists in surgery, internal medicine, and dermatology, and with cardiology available part-time, our environment is fast-paced, challenging, and collaborative.Although our hospital population consists mainly of dogs and cats, there is also a significant referral of small exotics, ferrets, rodents, and lagamorphs through our association with the Avian and Exotic Clinic of the Monterey Peninsula, which shares our facility. The Monterey Peninsula is a beautiful setting, surrounded by white sand beaches and mountain ranges that support an active outdoor lifestyle. Fisherman’s Wharf, Pebble Beach, world-class restaurants, art galleries and the Monterey Bay Aquarium are a short distance away. The Big Sur coastline is nearby, offering some of the most pristine beaches, hiking trails, and camping in California. Program Overview:The internship program is directly supported by board-certified specialists. Each intern rotates equally through emergency, internal medicine, surgery, and dermatology, with emphasis on a “hands on” approach. Interns are required to develop aptitude in surgery, ultrasound, intradermal skin testing, rapid assessment and disease diagnosis, and patient management. Interns are strongly encouraged to develop clinical independence with supervision.Ideal Candidate:The ideal candidate will demonstrate self-motivation and collegiality. He or she will be punctual and detail oriented, enjoy learning and interacting with clients, and assist in teaching our technicians and assistants to be the best they can be. Applicants should strive to better their clinical skills as veterinarians, and show enthusiasm for the process of learning. Compassion and the wish to provide top-notch medical care is a must. Applicants should have a DVM/VMD or equivalent degree and be eligible for California licensure. An interview or externship is strongly recommended for all applicants. Phone interviews are acceptable as well.
