Additional Information about Program

Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group is pleased to announce twelve (12) positions for an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery. Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group (VERG) is a progressive, 7000 square foot state-of-the-art emergency and referral hospital in the trendy Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn. Along with our VERG South location in the Marine Park section, we accept referrals from over 300 local practices throughout the tri-state area, which provides us with diverse and interesting cases. Specialty services include Surgery (General, Orthopedic, and Neurosurgery), Internal Medicine, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Neurology, and Dermatology. Our support staff consists of an amazing group of highly skilled and trained technicians and assistants. Our facility is equipped with digital x-ray (DR) and fluoroscopy, dedicated Philips abdominal and cardiac ultrasound units, two surgery suites, endoscopy, cystoscopy, bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy, laparoscopy, arthroscopy, and thoracoscopy, as well as a full in-house laboratory. We also have the only veterinary MRI system in Brooklyn.VERG has entered the 11th year of successful internship training. Our interns work closely with staff doctors, and therefore benefit from individualized attention. Interns will spend time on the various specialties with approximately 1/3rd of their time devoted to emergency cases. While interns will have primary case responsibility, they have direct support from at least 1-2 experienced emergency clinicians working along with the intern. Advanced procedures, including endoscopy and surgery, are routine for emergency cases and interns will have direct involvement in the cases from start to finish. A typical week for the intern includes an average of five shifts per week with two days off. The main hospital is located in an upscale section of Brooklyn, minutes away from downtown Manhattan. Brooklyn has more than enough to keep a person entertained, and the collection of museums, parks, and historical landmarks is the reason Brooklyn is a popular tourist site. The area is family friendly (with a pre-school next door), but also trendy enough for the younger crowd with numerous restaurants and lounges along “Restaurant Row” only a block away. In addition, we are minutes away from beautiful Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the cultural hub of Manhattan. VERG prides itself on being a fun yet intellectually stimulating place to work. Our staff looks forward to coming to work each day and we are seeking motivated and enthusiastic candidates who share those attributes with us. Applicants should contact Dr. Brett Levitzke by phone or email with questions or to schedule an interview. In-person interviews are mandatory, though phone interviews will be considered for those students who have previously visited or performed an externship at the hospital. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact our current interns or visit our website at www.verg-brooklyn.com for more information.
