Additional Information about Program

The rotating internship with Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Services (VSES)/Animal Hospital of Pittsford (AHOP)/and Rochester Community Animal Clinic (RCAC) is a collaborative effort which began in 1987, in order to provide exposure to complex referral cases, emergency and critical care medicine, high volume surgical procedures, outpatient wellness and urgent care as well as high-quality general practice. Since inception, we have had over 100 individuals successfully complete our program. We have an excellent record of placing motivated interns into residencies across the country. We have matched interns into residencies in dentistry, internal medicine, surgery, emergency/critical care medicine, ophthalmology, oncology, zoological medicine, anatomic pathology, lab animal medicine, neurology, dermatology, radiology, cardiology and clinical pathology. If you are looking for a challenging, exciting internship with an opportunity for both personal and professional growth, your search has ended! This internship provides an outstanding opportunity for 8 motivated veterinarians to gain exposure to complex referral cases, emergency and critical care medicine, and high-quality general practice. Your internship experience will provide you with exposure to cases and learning experiences equivalent to 3 years of private practice work. These educational opportunities, combined with your broad clinical exposure are designed to prepare you for application for a residency in your field of interest or a fast-paced, advanced private practice or emergency hospital. VSES is a 28,000 square foot facility that is well equipped with a GE Vivid cardiac ultrasound, digital ECG, 1.0 tesla Siemens MRI, access to an off-site helical CT, digital radiography, ultrasound, rigid and flexible endoscopy, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, complete on-site full service diagnostic laboratory and comprehensive surgical facilities. The facility also includes a 3500 square foot veterinary continuing education center. We are currently planning for renovation of clinical treatment room space, as well as for the addition of an on-site 16-slice helical CT. Our specialists include two surgeons, two internists, one ophthalmologist, one radiologist and a part-time neurologist and dermatologist. Additionally, our emergency department consists of six attending clinicians (five of which are internship trained), including one ABVP diplomate. Our licensed technical staff includes emergency/critical care certified licensed veterinary technicians. Our staff is very proud to support our well established internship and residency programs that currently include two surgical residents, one internal medicine specialty intern and eight rotating interns. Interns will rotate through internal medicine, surgery, radiology and ophthalmology services under the direct supervision of board certified specialists. They will also rotate through emergency and have exposure to dermatology and neurology on a limited basis. Other rotations may be available on-site as new staff is added (we are currently recruiting for a cardiologist) and or off-site (externships), depending on the intern’s areas of interest and our ability to foster such a program. As your skills and knowledge base improve, your responsibilities will increase. Emergency/critical care rotations are divided into day and over-night shifts. During this rotation you will have primary case responsibility with direct mentorship from an attending staff doctor. Approximately 1/3 of your internship will be spent on the emergency serviceThe GP portion of your internship is divided between AHOP and RCAC. AHOP, a component of Monroe Veterinary Associates, occupies a 14,000 square foot facility and hosts the general practice portion of the internship. Rotations at this hospital provide experience in wellness care, elective and general surgery, dentistry and problem exams under the supervision of experienced general practitioners. During your general practice rotation you will be spending time at RCAC. This practice setting will give you the opportunity to observe and participate in a low income, high volume spay/neuter clinic, as well as a community wellness and urgent care outpatient clinic. To complete your educational opportunities you will be expected to attend and actively participate in daily rounds including case-based rounds, journal club as well as didactic rounds. As time permits you are encouraged to attend continuing education lectures sponsored by local and regional organizations and to attend 1 national CE conference. Interns are required to present one formal seminar. Intern compensation includes a salary (paid weekly), single policy health care coverage, liability (malpractice) insurance, AVMA dues, dues to the NYSVMS/GVVMA and up to $372 to cover NYS licensure fee. Additional benefits include: 8 paid days vacation with scheduling approval by the director; 3 paid days to attend CE; $850 CE allowance to help defray registration, travel and lodging costs. We seek enthusiastic, self-motivated interns who are interested in advancing their education, case management and leadership skills in a team-oriented environment. Rochester is located in Western New York. It offers one of the broadest ranges of cultural, sporting and recreational activities of any comparable sized city in the United States. Many of our interns have stayed in Rochester to join our group, which we believe is a testament to the desirability of living in this community, and the esteem in which our group of practices is held. NYS veterinary license requirements must be met to be considered. US or Canadian citizenship is required.
