Additional Information about Program

Small Animal Rotating Internship The Companion Animal Hospital of the Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre (OVC HSC) is a large referral centre located in Southern Ontario. The caseload consists of approximately 90% referral and 10% non-referral cases. This one-year, rotating program commences in late-June with a major portion of the intern's training with medicine, surgery, and emergency services. Opportunities are provided for electives in other specialty areas (cardiology, oncology, ophthalmology, critical care, radiology, etc.). The surgery caseload comprises of orthopedic, soft tissue, neurosurgery, and oncology cases. The intern selects a faculty mentor who is responsible for supervision and overall clinical performance evaluation. The intern will be responsible for the management of cases admitted to the hospital, as part of a team consisting of a faculty member, resident, intern and three to five phase 4 veterinary students. Within the service team concept, the intern has primary case responsibility with faculty supervision. The intern will participate in the clinical training of fourth-year veterinary students and will participate in daily case rounds, and will attend weekly Grand Rounds. All interns will be scheduled for out-of-hours emergency duty on a rotating basis and required to remain in the hospital when on day/night/weekend duty. The intern always maintains the ability to consult with specialists from the various services. Interns are allotted working days for elective time (10) and for vacation (10). Elective time may be used for internal electives, continuing education or job interviews. Scheduling of electives and vacation must be approved by the Intern Coordinator and the Clinical Advisor. Please note that this position requires a Post Graduate & Resident license through the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO) to practice veterinary medicine in Ontario. The CVO licensing fees and associated administrative fees must be paid directly to the CVO. The OVC HSC will reimburse the cost of your licensure, excluding the associated administrative fees, upon submission of the original receipt to the OVC HSC. In the final 6 months of your internship (January – June) the CVO pro-rates the fee for PGR licensees. If you hold a General license in the final 6 months of your internship, OVC HSC will reimburse half of the license fee upon submission of the official CVO receipt. For health insurance for Canadian residents who live in provinces other than Ontario, successfully matched Interns will be required to contact their Provincial Health Insurance Plan and advise them they are moving to Ontario. Ordinarily three (3) months’ coverage will be provided by your home province following your relocation to Ontario during the three (3) month waiting period following submission of an application to the Ontario Health Insurance Plan. Interns who are not Canadian Citizens or Permanent residents of Canada will need to apply for health insurance through the University of Guelph Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) upon arrival. The Intern will be charged for this coverage (~$60/month single); however, they will also immediately apply for health coverage through the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). There is no charge for OHIP. Once the application is approved and proof submitted to Human Resources, the deduction for UHIP will cease. Interns are entitled to coverage through the University of Guelph Extended Health Care Plan. Eligible extended health care benefits include vision care expenses, prescription drugs, semi-private hospital care, out-of-province emergency travel assistance benefits; paramedical services such as chiropractors, podiatrists, physiotherapists, massage therapists and acupuncturists. The Ontario Veterinary College is a part of the University of Guelph, which has a full-time graduate and undergraduate student enrollment of approximately 20,275. The City of Guelph has a population of more than 121,000 and is situated 80 km (50 miles) west of Toronto. Guelph is rich in culture, architecture, and parks with a variety of recreation and leisure opportunities. As a companion animal referral centre, the College is exceptionally well situated with over 6 million people living within a 90 minute drive of the University.
