Additional Information about Program

Are you looking for a program that will allow you to build on your education and training? The internship at the Veterinary Medical and Surgical Group (VMSG) places special emphasis on learning. If you desire to continue your academic learning experience in a specialty private practice setting, you should apply to the internship program at VMSG. If you are interested in doing a lot on your own, with minimal to no guidance or support and little to no exposure to a full spectrum of board certified specialists do NOT apply to this internship. If you are looking to be mentored and trained by well respected board certified specialists then we invite you to apply to the internship program at VMSG.VMSG is a well established and highly respected, 24 hour hospital. VMSG offers emergency and critical care, internal medicine, cardiology, oncology, radiology, integrative medicine, and surgery. VMSG is located approximately two miles from the beach in Ventura, California. Ventura is a beautiful, semi-rural, coastal community one hour north of Los Angeles and one-half hour south of Santa Barbara. Ventura has an ideal climate for outdoor recreation. This internship places a strong emphasis on learning. Interns at VMSG participate in Inpatient Rounds on a daily basis. Didactic lectures and radiology rounds are held weekly. Journal Club and morbidity and mortality rounds are held monthly. Lunchtime CE seminars occur semi-monthly. Interns also present organized lectures to staff and colleagues. You will become comfortable with emergency triage and assessment, medical and surgical decision making, ultrasonography, endoscopy, and many other highly specialized medical and surgical procedures. Every three weeks interns are exposed to a new department mentored by a specialist overseeing that service. On each rotation, interns are responsible for case management and primary patient care with a direct working / learning relationship with the specialist. Primary overnight and weekend emergency shifts comprise about 19% of an intern's duties, but with direct access to specialist consultation and direction. This allows for practicing emergency medicine with primary case responsibility, with the support of a synergistic specialty team. We provide general practice experience and spay/neuter experience at a well established local practice. With the exception of this, other general practice or other specialty experience is limited to the intern's discretion, but the internship provides opportunities to gain general veterinary practice and other outside specialty experience. We strive hard to provide an exceptional internship experience that is unmatched by any other with a special emphasis on learning and quality patient care. Check out our website at vmsg.com.
