Basic Principles of the Selection Process

The Basic Principles of the Selection Process are as follows:

1. The applicants will get the highest ranked institution on their listing which has an opening for them.

2. Whether or not the institution is open to a candidate is dependent on selection and on the slots not being filled with applicants ranked higher by the institution.

3. The candidates may apply to any number of programs, thus increasing the possibility of obtaining an internship or residency.

4. Candidates are not matched to an institution not selected by the candidate.

5. Preferences are decided by the applicant in private and the ranking is confidential.

6. No pressure or salesmanship is applied on the selection day.

7. The institutional rankings are confidential.

8. All choices are considered simultaneously.

9. Unmatched applicants will be immediately notified by VIRMP.

10. The cooperating institutions can place limitations on the number of applicants they will accept from one school. This will assure a greater representation of universities in the hospital programs.

Responsibilities

Both applicants and institutions, following the submissions of their rankings, are fully committed to the results of the matching program. The institutions and the applicants are not allowed to negotiate separately. The candidate does not have to divulge his/her rankings. A request by the institution for such ranking is a violation of the code, and should be reported to the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians.

Final Completion of Selection Process

Following the completion of the matching process, the institution and the candidates will be notified via email to sign into the website to get their match. The institution will also contact all successful applicants to confirm starting dates and formalize the agreement.

Publication of Matched and Unmatched Candidate Names

The VIRMP will publish two rosters following the completion of the match as listed below:

(a) A list of all matched candidates and the program to which they were matched.

(b) A list of all unmatched candidates, including their address, telephone number, and type of program to which they applied.

These lists will be mailed to all participating institutions immediately following the match and to other institutions or practices requesting the list, after a waiting period of 10 business days. The purpose of publishing the list of unmatched candidates is to facilitate the placement of as many candidates as possible into training programs.
